Visit with us the Olomouc Archdiocesan Museum
Welcome to the Olomouc Archdiocesan Museum, the only cultural institution of its kind in the Czech Republic, which specializes in religious art from the 12th to the 18th century. It was founded in 1998 as a part of the Olomouc Museum of Art, and the area itself has been open to the public since 2006. Part of the Archdiocesan Museum is the Romanesque Bishop's Palace at the Cathedral of St. Wenceslas and the northern part of the former castle, which belonged to the Czech rulers of the Přemyslid family. The chapter deanery was later built on the site of the castle.
Thanks to the Archdiocesan Museum project, the major part of Olomouc Přemyslid Castle was thoroughly reconstructed. So you can see not only the archaeological findings documenting the six thousand years of settlement of this locality but, above all, you can visit all the places where the history of the Czech lands was written. Over the centuries, the three Czech lands were Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. Olomouc lies in the historic land of Moravia.
The Archdiocesan Museum is a good example of how the state and the Church can manage historical objects and monuments in concert and cooperation. In the permanent exhibition there are not only works of art from the archbishop's collections, but also treasures from many ecclesiastical sites from the whole of the Olomouc archdiocese.
