Stairway Hall - St. Peter duelling with Simon Magus

The main patron of Baroque culture in Olomouc was undoubtedly the Catholic Church, and the most respected and sought-after artists of the time were employed. Among them was the Viennese painter Paul Troger. It was Paul Troger who painted these scenes from the lives of the leading figures of early Christianity - the apostles Peter and Paul. Many scenes have harmonious colouring and refined lighting, and their subjects are unusual. The painting of the duel between St. Peter and Simon Magus, who claimed to be more powerful than God, relate to the culmination of the dispute. Simon Magus wanted to demonstrate his ability to fly. Despite the favour of the Roman Emperor Nero, shown on his throne, Simon was defeated by Peter's prayers, and his proud rise to the heavens ended in his infamous and fatal fall to his death.
