Hall of Neptune – Flagellation of Christ

A separate depiction of the flagellation of Christ does not appear until the late Middle Ages. Works of this type served in particular to contemplate Christ's suffering. In the Baroque, the pillar to which Christ is attached is usually in the form of a low column reminiscent of the shape and colour of a precious relic worshipped in the Basilica of St. Praxedes in Rome. Normally, however, we also encounter the completely free style of the column in the shape of a balustrade pillar, as is the case with the statue here. The author of the work, German sculptor Josef Winterhalder the Elder, is an important figure among Baroque artists working in Moravia. He attended the Vienna Academy and, after his arrival in Olomouc, he worked mainly for the Premonstratensian cannons in Hradisko. The statue of Christ’s flagellation is one of his early works.
