Chapel of St. Barbara

The Chapel of St. Barbara was built in the middle of the 18th century by the reconstruction of the upper floors of the original Romanesque residential tower of the Přemyslid castle. We saw its foundations in the New Cellars of the Archdiocesan Museum. The present form and furnishings date from the neo-Renaissance restoration of the chapel in the late 19th century.

Above the altar in which the remains of Saints Longinus, Eustace and Christin are placed, there is a painting of the Enthroned Madonna crowned by angels with Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Clare, John the Baptist and Saint Bartholomew. Its origins, which date back to 1600, are not known. On the altar table we can see copies of candlesticks and a crucifix by the famous Mannerist Venetian sculptor Alessandro Vittorio. In the chapel, a lamp of the eternal flame hangs in the form of a crown with nine Marian stars, carried by three angels. It is a scale copy of a lamp from the Chigi family chapel in the Romanesque church of S. Maria del Popolo - designed by one of the most important Baroque artists, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The paintings on the walls relate to the life of St. Barbara.
