New Hall - St. James Retabulum

The second part of the New Hall exhibition is dedicated to the late Gothic art of the 15th and 16th centuries. The sculptural works here show the influence of Dutch realism and the advanced art of the sculptor, whose prominent figure was Veit Stoss, author of, for example, a large altar in the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary in Krakow in Poland. His work was also inspired by the author of the retabulum of Saint James the Greater in Rokytnice near Přerov. This sandstone, today a heavily damaged part of the altar, shows the almost free figure of St. James the Apostle in the clothing of a medieval pilgrim. The relief along the sides is complemented by the smaller figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary, followed by the apostles Peter and Paul.

Taking the concrete walkway, we climb up into the cloister. This is the first time in its thousand-year history that the site of the former chapter deanery interconnects with the Romanesque Bishop's Palace.
