New Hall – The Křivák Pieta

The second most important exhibit, which is located opposite the Sternberg Madonna, is the Pieta from the collection of the Olomouc canon Petr Křivák. It is again a work in the beautiful style that surprises with its realistic execution. The stone from which the Pieta is carved is brought to life thanks to the masterful work and polychromy, a layer of paint applied to the surface of the statue. This polychromy is ninety percent original. We can see the statue in almost the same form as it was more than 600 years ago, when it was created by an unknown Prague sculptor. The Virgin Mary's tears are made of translucent resin, and contribute to the realistic impression. Prague Pietas were very popular at the end of the 14th century and were exported to other European countries. The Křivák Pieta, is one the best surviving examples.
