Armorial Hall - Christ below the Cross (the picture is under the care of the restorer).

Sorry, the picture is currently under the care of the restorer.

One of the most important works in the Armorial Hall is the image of the dead Christ below the cross, the work of the Florentine Mannerist painter Alessandro Allori. The painting is not a colourful one, as is typical of the Florentine school, but it is characterized by the perfect drawing and precision of anatomical details. Restricting the composition to Christ's dead body underlines the monumentality and expression of this unique work.

The painting was commissioned directly from the painter in 1583 by Olomouc priest Jan Dambrowski, called Philopon, who probably poisoned four Olomouc bishops. The purchase was to be a repentant gesture that did not save him - he was convicted, deprived of his priesthood and most likely executed.
