Treasure House - Monstrance of the Golden Sun of Moravia

The Treasure House presents a selection of the most valuable goldsmith's liturgical objects from the collections of the Olomouc Archbishopric. The exhibits represent several stylistic periods from the Gothic to the Baroque.

Among the most precious items of the church treasury is the monstrance, which served to display and worship the transformation of the Host in the Catholic church. We find the most precious one in the middle of the room. This monstrance, called the Golden Sun of Moravia, is decorated with more than 1,400 diamonds and 18 large emeralds. It was made in the middle of the 18th century from the bequest of Olomouc Bishop Wolfgang Schrattenbach and other high prelates of the Church. Part of its decoration comprises some older elements that could have come from objects that are now unknown. The rarest is the golden enamel shield set into the back of the monstrance leg. It represents St. Wenceslas on a throne with three coats of arms at his feet. It is the symbol of the Olomouc chapter, which was awarded the honorary title "faithful" by Emperor Ferdinand II in 1623.
